Ohh, Helicopter Parents.. Are You? Let's Tell it Like it is People!

Parenting Style.. And Oh Yes, The Helicopter Parent.. Are You?

Are YOU a Helicopter Parent?

Oh, how that constant hovering by overprotective parents can stir up some serious looks from observing bystanders... yes?

Have you caught yourself in this "parenting advice" scenario with friends? Excuse me, but you're hovering over your kid like a crazy lady. You realize that, right?

You're all about your kid and have completely lost your own identity and likely are absent from any conversation not involving them.

You coddle them, treat them like royalty and are way to involved in their ever motion, word and action...

Daily you complain of sheer exhaustion, yet from playdate to college, you've got it all mapped out and will be present through the entire ride.

Your claim you are a suckered "cab driver" as you shuttle them from soccer, to ballet, to swim meet. Meanwhile, they just want to stay home and maybe dig in the back yard for a snail or two. But, no, you with your pom poms insist that your future ivy leaguer strives for more so you shove him in the car with a pizza pocket and five changes of clothes.

You've been that annoying sideline parent who yells at the referee, runs out when a shoe lace is untied and at the end of the season... you've awarded him with an MVP trophy of his own ("since he didn't get one and he tried so hard")..

Yes, helicopter parent, your intentions are good, but are we doing them any good? Are we raising them up for a hard fall? Believe you me... I also need to ponder if this parenting style is in my own bag of tricks.

People say:

These days, children are being smothered and sheltered which will enviably hinder their ability to make decisions, deal with let downs and and establish healthy relationships and hold down a job.

These crazed parents are trying to create perfect little "decorative accomplished" kids rather than allowing them to just be kids. Getting dirty... making the wrong decision and learning from it... and ultimately making decisions on their own and feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Yes, as always with the parenting advice and parenting style topic... there are two sides to the coin.

Let's hear it from you..

Are you emphasizing education, independence and discipline -- while improving upon their shortcomings?

Has authoritarian gone by the way side in your house? Maybe less authority over the kids, but more negotiation, compromise, honesty... You spend more time actually talking to your kids about real things and focusing on the art of communicating and interactions with people?

Does this make us pushovers? A friend more than a parent?

Is it happy hour yet?

Is Your Helicopter Parenting A Set Up for A Crash And Burn?

Let's hear it people...
